This renovation and addition completely reinvented the main entry to a large grocery store on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington state. Custom-designed and fabricated weathering steel details include a backlit silhouette of Orcas Island, branded “Island Market” signage, and perforated panels that make up a map of the San Juan Islands and provide shade for adjacent interior spaces.
A new steel moment frame supports an all new wall of glass with windows meant to stand up to harsh island conditions. Custom details at new exposed column bases and tops contextualize the design in the island vernacular.
Interior work included a reconfiguration of checkstands, a new bar, and a completely transformed deli area.
