On a sloped site in Washington, an existing dilapidated house will be demolished in order to make way for a new house suited to a growing family. The new residence features luxury amenities including a 40 foot lap pool, pool house, large terrace, home gym, completely private study, and a large creative studio space suited to the owners’ needs. Numerous glass panels stretch from the floor to the soaring twelve foot tall ceilings throughout the main level, and vaulted ceilings at the second level have been fine tuned to the owners’ preferences.

The house sits at the top of a cliff that overlooks the Columbia River in the distance, prompting a simple orientation of an offset gable volume that stretches out to respond to the view and southern solar exposure. The auto court that defines the entry is oriented around an existing maple tree, and the various wings of the house are connected by glass links.

Communal spaces such as the living, kitchen, and dining spaces are arranged on the main level along with an expansive master suite, fit for aging in place. The house is designed to accommodate modern accessibility standards, featuring three foot wide doors and generous circulation spaces.

Due to the massive openings, current cost of wood construction, and robustness advantages, steel will be utilized as the primary structure of the house. No roof overhangs are used, allowing for maximum light throughout the interior.
